CICERO Latin and Class Civ competition 2018
This year’s competition for Sixth Form students (S4-S6 in Scotland) will take place on Saturday 17 March 2018. It’s a challenging and engaging competition with plenty of fun, and has three rounds – Latin translation, Cultural Quiz (this year’s topic is plant metamorphosis in Ovid – think Daphne, Narcissus and others!) and a team quiz. Students can take part in the Latin competition and/or the Cultural Competition. There are four regional centres this year – Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls in Hertfordshire, Bristol Grammar School, Blue Coat School in Liverpool, and George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh. For more details, please contact Andy Keen (firstname.lastname@example.org)
It is an ideal way to give pupils a sense of the Classics community as well as boosting their appreciation of Classics subjects. Our day at BGS starts with the cultural paper, progresses to the quiz followed by a guest speaker. After lunch, we have the translating paper, for which pupils can use a dictionary to help them (there are Upper and Lower Sixth bands).
The cultural paper this year is on various myths from Ovid’s Metamorphoses with a “plant” theme (more on the website ). The myths are:
