CICERO UK 2019

CICERO Latin and Class Civ competition 2019

This year’s competition for Sixth Form students (S4-S6 in Scotland) will take place on Saturday 23 March 2019. It’s a challenging and engaging competition with plenty of fun, and has three rounds – Latin translation, Cultural Quiz (this year’s topic is Mythological Animals – think Cerberus, the Hydra and others!) and a team quiz. Students can take part in the Latin competition and/or the Cultural Competition. There are four regional centres this year – Bristol Grammar School, Liverpool College, George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh, and Harrow School. For more details, please contact Andy Keen (akeen@bgs.bristol.sch.uk)

It is an ideal way to give pupils a sense of the Classics community as well as boosting their appreciation of Classics subjects. The Translating section gives pupils confidence in tackling an unseen passage and the cultural test gives an opportunity to dig deeper into an aspect of Classical culture. The team challenge is in the form of a quiz on wide ranging topics from antiquity. Pupils from Lower and Upper Sixth enter. Pupils can sit one paper or both. Our day at BGS starts with the cultural paper, progresses to the quiz followed by a guest speaker. After lunch, we have the translating paper, for which pupils can use a dictionary to help them (there are Upper and Lower Sixth bands).

Past papers can be found on this website here: https://ciceroconcordia.wordpress.com/2019/02/08/cicero-past-papers/

The cultural paper this year is on Mythological Animals. The animals are:
